Have a budget in mind when you start your project- and arm us to stick to it by sharing it. Even our most enthusiastic clients don’t have bottomless checkbooks, and we know you need your money for other important things. Even if you are planning to install your garden yourself - there is such a great difference in material costs. For example a screen of Columnar European Hornbeams costs ten times what a screen of Arborvitae does. An espalier that is already trained is forty times as expensive as a whip we can teach you to train yourself. As a rule of thumb -slow-growing, or mature shrubs and trees are the most valuable/costly. This is because the nurseries have to care for them so long before they sell them – and they deserve a return on that investment. Slow-growing or mature plants have to be trimmed less often, however, and can create instant impact in a space. Sometimes to get something, you have to give something up. We will ask if you want immediate gratification, or if you are willing to wait. Overhead – and your cost - is kept to a minimum by our use of contracted specialists for each job. Any combination of trusted, insured, and professional excavators, carpenters, plantsmen, and nursery staff are added to the team – for the exact number of hours we need them, and no more. For each major phase of a project (design or installation) we bill half of our fees up front. The other half is collected on the day we deliver - upon receipt of the design or the day we install your garden. We can design and install, design only, and if you wish to do all of the work yourself, including drawing your own design, Karen can coach you in your garden by the hour.
